Proper Maintenance Tips for Bunded Tanks

The experts in the industry qualify bunded tanks as the ideal storage facility for any type of liquid fuel, even for heating oil which is practically used in many homes. Reason behind this is that heating oil is hazardous.

Heating oil is so noxious that if there is a spillage or if a leak incident occurred, it can wreak damage of unimaginable proportions to wildlife and vegetation. Therefore, aside from proper care and right precautionary measures in place, you need to contain inside a secure and reliable storage facility like a bunded fuel tank

Accidents can strike at any given time and unexpected problems will come to the surface without any warning, but if you are doing things right, for the most part, you will be fine. The following pointers will teach you how to properly maintain your fuel storage tank.

Avoid Purchasing Too Much Oil

Many of us think that buying as much oil as we can if their prices are lower makes sense. While this is indeed a practical thing to do, it can lead to a problem most especially when we are trying to keep our fuel tanks in tip-top shape. If you store too much liquid in your fuel tank, you are increasing your risk of an overflow situation or worst, leaks are likely to occur if you will go beyond the limit of what your storage can contain.

Regular Inspections

If your home is equipped with its own bunded storage tank, regular weekly inspection of the tank is crucial. It’s a lot, that is the normal impression that people will have about it.

The trick here is, add it up to your things to do every week. Set a fixed schedule for this and make it sure that you follow it, eventually, this will become a habit for you and not just a task that you need to carry when the time has come. Regular inspection of your tank gives you a chance to immediately identify any problem right before they become a major issue, with serious consequences and may cost a hefty amount of money to fix.

Make It Sure That Your Pipework Fittings are Tightened

In bunded storage tanks, loose pipework fittings can easily become a big problem, and for this reason, you need to regularly check on them. Checking your pipework fittings can be integrated into your weekly inspection routine. Besides the weekly inspection, it is also highly recommended to have it checked by you duly qualified professional like a licensed engineer or a boiler technician perhaps. The important thing here is, it’s safety is closely monitored by an expert eye.

Clean the Interior

There is no possible way that you can keep your tank interior always clean, most especially when you are constantly using it. You can’t just shut it down for a while just so you can empty it and clean it safely.

But if happen to have a good chance clean your tank thoroughly, you will realize the difference that it can make in terms of making your tank more efficient. Leaving your fuel tanks not cleaned for some time will allow the build-up of sludge within your tank walls. No matter what you do, nothing will prevent this from happening and only cleaning your tank is the best way out of it.

When It Rains…

The rainy season runs the risk of creating unnecessary problems for your fuel tank. Of paramount importance to this to immediately check out the bund itself and see if there is any amount of water has gotten inside of it.

Rule of thumb here when it comes to your bund is that it should be good and spacious enough to contain everything that your tank can hold, that should also go with an additional 10%. If this amount of space is consumed by rainwater, it runs the risk of having  a major problem in any case that you need to empty your tank into the bund. There would not be enough space to contain the oil.
